In 2006, the developer commissioned WYG to undertake a feasibility study for the substitution of an existing Coal Authority active mine water treatment, which is currently carried out using hydrated lime followed by settlement and aerobic wetlands.
The feasibility study concluded that the mine water could be treated by utilising passive methods i.e. aeration, settlement and aerobic wetlands and that the scheme could be constructed on a nearby disused colliery spoil heap. The scheme also included the provision of a balance pond and to enable the Coal Authority to continue to utilise "off-peak" electricity by pumping the mine water only during the night. The revised scheme is to be adopted by the Coal Authority.
