Horden, Country Durham
IMC / WYG were commissioned by The Coal Authority to carry out design work for an active treatment plant at the shaft top compound at the Horden site. The active treatment plant was constructed in 2004. Water is pumped directly from the shaft and treated chemically, using sodium hydroxide before being discharged to sea via a discharge pipe. The pumping and treating of mine water is necessary to protect the aquifer from pollution by the recovering mine water.
As part of the long term solution for the control and treatment of mine water, it is intended that a passive treatment scheme will replace the active plant in this location of the Durham Coalfield. WYG are currently involved in the outline design phase for this passive system.
